 What is Directive?

RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. It is a directive, NOT a law, adopted by the European Parliament in February 2003. This directive has become effective from July 1st, 2006.

RoHS is commonly understood to be the lead-free requirement, but actually it restricts the use of SIX substances – Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Chromium VI, PBB and PBDE. The maximum permissible concentration is 0.1% for all the substances except Chromium VI for which it is 0.01% by weight. This limit applies to the INDIVIDUAL components or the assembly that could be mechanically separated.

The directive applies to all household appliances; IT, telecommunication, consumer and lighting equipments; electrical and electronic tools; toys, leisure and sports equipment; and automatic dispensers. The directive however does not apply to fixed industrial plant and tools. It applies to products used in the European Union. Compliance is the responsibility of the company any where in the world that puts the product on the market in European Union.

What is WEEE?

WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. This also became a European law in February 2003. It sets collection, recycling and recovery targets for all types of electrical goods.

The companies are required to establish an infrastructure for collecting the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment from households and use this collected waste in an ecological-friendly manner. As per the WEEE directive Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment includes large and small household appliances; office and communication equipments; entertainment electronics; lighting equipments; e-tools; sports & leisure equipments; medical appliances and instruments; surveillance equipments; and automatic issuing systems.
